The traditional Long Beach backyard—a fragile rectangle of thirsty grass bordered by a concrete slab—is officially outdated. A new aesthetic has taken its place, celebrating the “marriage” of hardscaping and greenery. This “green-meets-gray” look, combining sleek concrete with vibrant artificial turf, is defining the modern, low-maintenance Southern California lifestyle.

At GAGA US Construction, we have seen this trend evolve from a niche choice to the new standard for hardscaping design. This combination of concrete with turf is more than just stylish; it is a functional, durable, and water-wise solution built for outdoor living.

More Than Just Looks: Functional Benefits

This trend is a direct response to the Southern California climate. A backyard composed entirely of concrete becomes a “heat island,” absorbing and radiating the intense Long Beach sun.

The concrete with turf design solves this. The turf strips act as cooling breaks within the hardscape, reducing heat retention compared to a solid patio. Furthermore, the turf adds softness underfoot, making the space comfortable for bare feet and visually balanced.

Design Inspiration: A Portfolio of Low-Maintenance Ideas

The versatility of this combination allows for endless creativity. Here are the most popular designs we install:

  • Turf Ribbons / Strips Gaps (2–6 inches wide) are left between large-format concrete pavers or poured slabs. The clean, geometric lines are perfect for walkways and modern patios.
  • Checkerboard Design A classic, formal pattern alternating square pavers with squares of artificial grass. This graphic look makes small courtyards feel larger and more dynamic.
  • Turf Borders Using artificial turf as a lush, green border to frame a central concrete patio. This eliminates the need for fragile natural grass edging that is hard to mow.

⚠️ The Expert Warning for Driveways

While turf ribbons create stunning driveways, there is a critical engineering constraint GAGA US Construction always emphasizes: The vehicle's wheels must rest mainly on the concrete.

Do NOT use a Checkerboard design for a driveway. The vehicle’s weight will crush the turf squares (which rest on a soft aggregate base), causing ruts and destroying the installation. Only narrow turf ribbons between load-bearing concrete pads are durable enough for vehicles.

Technical Guide: New Installation vs. Retrofit

Achieving the sharp, modern look requires a flawless professional installation. The method changes entirely depending on whether we are pouring new concrete or cutting into an existing slab.

Feature Project A: New Installation
(Soil Base)
Project B: Retrofit
(Existing Concrete)
Base Prep Pavers laid on compacted aggregate; gaps filled with base. Strips are cut out of the slab; concrete is non-permeable.
Drainage Natural percolation through the sub-base. Critical: Must drill drainage holes through the slab.
Securing Method 6-inch staples or non-galvanized nails. Weather-proof turf adhesive (No nails).
Difficulty Standard Hardscaping Expert Precision Required

Common Questions About Turf & Pavers

How do you clean the turf strips?
Maintenance is simple. Use a leaf blower to remove debris from the strips. If spills occur, simply rinse them down with a hose; the water will drain through the perforated backing.
Will the turf peel up at the edges?
Not if installed correctly. For new installations, we use long spikes into the base. For concrete retrofits, we use industrial-grade adhesive along the perimeter to create a permanent bond that prevents lifting.
Can I use this design for a pool deck?
Yes, it is excellent for pool decks. However, when designing for bare feet, the hardscaping materials pool selection becomes critical. We recommend materials with high heat resistance to ensure comfort.
